One spring day, J and I were just starting out to run our errands when we spotted a young crow in the middle of the street. It didn't move as cars rolled by, and fearing it was hurt, we stopped to lend a hand.
I think it understood our kind intentions from the start; it allowed me to gently scoop it up and cover it with a cloth. We brought it home and did our absolute best to care for the fledgling, quickly learning all the essential dos and don’ts regarding the brilliant Corvid species.
"Marco" ended up living with us for a few weeks—at one point, we truly thought we had permanently inherited a crow! During his time with us, Marco became a true member of our clan, routinely hopping up to sit contentedly on our shoulders, heads, or laps. He slept soundly each night in a cozy box lined with flat blankets. Eventually, his mama showed up in the yard, and with constant, urgent cawing, she finally convinced him to fly away home to his proper family.
I captured his image with my iPhone before he left, and I painted this tribute in acrylic layers to preserve his memory.
We still miss Marco. I hope you like the painting.
