#0020-"The Old Mill (The Autumn Waterwheel Reflection)"
✨Curator's Comments & Review
This painting captures a magnificent display of rustic historic architecture, vibrant autumn foliage transitions, and glassy aquatic mirroring.
Titled The Old Mill, the horizontal composition centers on a classic wooden watermill resting along a peaceful riverbank as the surrounding forest turns into brilliant seasonal hues.
There are three central elements that make this watercolor work:
1. A Fiery Autumn Canopy Frame
The undisputed physical and emotional engine of the layout is the towering canopy on the left. Campos textures this autumn foliage with fantastic illustrative precision, layering dense, overlapping dabs of vibrant cadmium orange, rich terracotta, and deep rust-red pigments, perfectly counterbalanced by a striking crimson-burgundy tree on the far right. This explosion of seasonal color frames the muted tones of the mill beautifully, forcing the building to step forward with great optical intensity.
2. A Hand-Crafted Timber Architecture Facade
Slicing gracefully through the center of the frame is the old mill structure itself. Campos builds the weathered wooden siding using soft plaster-white and charcoal shading, accented by a detailed, multi-spoked waterwheel nestled under a gray shingled roofline. This sudden presence of historical masonry and engineering provides a highly reliable sense of real-world scale, giving the country setting incredible narrative depth.
3. A Balanced, Chartreuse Meadow Wash
The background and left margins serve as a magnificent showcase of watercolor transparency and temperature contrast. Campos blankets the open meadow lanes in exploding, wet-on-wet washes of bright lemon yellow, electric chartreuse, and soft leafy greens. This high-visibility, luminous background mimics a fresh morning sun filtering through the valley, allowing the entire layout to breathe with absolute balance and beautiful open space.
The painting features a handwritten signature and date along the lower right border: M.R. Campos 7-2021
